Your AI-Generated UI Is Indistinguishable From Everyone Else's

Open five SaaS products right now. Same left sidebar. Same card grid. Same hollow empty-state illustration with a friendly character. Same gradient primary button. You didn't copy each other. You all asked the same AI.
The democratization of UI design worked exactly as promised. The result is exactly what that sounds like.
The Arc From 2023 to Now
In October 2023, Vercel launched V0 — a tool that generates UI from a text prompt. Figma shipped AI features into its core product. Lovable, Cursor, and a wave of similar tools followed over the next 18 months. The pitch was straightforward: drop the barrier to entry, let more teams ship faster. By 2025, every startup with a two-person team had access to the same generative design toolkit as any mature product company.
The outputs converged accordingly.
This was predictable in hindsight. When every team uses the same tools trained on the same component libraries and the same design patterns, the outputs trend toward the average of that distribution. AI tools are optimized to produce interfaces that look like interfaces. Adequate by design. Indistinguishable by default.
What Nielsen Norman Group Found in 2026
Nielsen Norman Group's State of UX 2026 report names this directly. The category they introduced: "lazy AI slop" — generated UI that functions correctly but carries no strategic intent. Their research documented it as a measurable trust problem, not an aesthetic complaint.
The finding: users show lower trust ratings for interfaces they perceive as generic, independent of whether those interfaces perform well on standard usability measures. Functionality was equivalent. Perceived trustworthiness was not. Generic design isn't just aesthetically forgettable — it signals that the organization behind the product doesn't have a considered point of view.
The NN/g report draws a distinction worth holding. UI execution has been democratized. Design strategy has not. The tools can produce the button. They cannot decide what the button should be for, or what it should communicate about the product that built it. "Lazy AI slop" is the term for the gap between those two things — output without intent.
The Copy That Never Was
There's something particular about how this homogenization happened. None of these products were copying each other in any deliberate sense.
Traditional design copying had intent. A startup copied a competitor because they believed the competitor had solved the problem. The borrowing was conscious and traceable. As this blog has noted about cut-and-paste personas in UX research, the core failure of borrowed patterns is that you import the output while leaving behind the context that made it work.
AI-generated UI is the same failure, automated and scaled. The tool produces patterns it has seen work before. Those patterns land in products with different users, different problems, different brand positions. The fit is assumed rather than earned. The result is an interface that is technically adequate and strategically empty — and indistinguishable from the interfaces produced by the ten competitors who used the same prompt.
Design Governance as the Remaining Moat
Here's what the conversation about AI-generated UI consistently misses: the companies that built strong design governance before 2023 are doing fine.
Design tokens, documented component systems, brand primitives, explicit constraints on voice and visual decision-making — these were expensive to build and maintain. Many teams cut corners on them because the value was hard to demonstrate in a sprint velocity metric. Now the value is straightforward to see: teams with strong design systems use AI tooling to extend those systems. Teams without them use AI to produce generic interfaces.
Figma's MCP integrations, token-based design systems, and constrained generation workflows mean that AI tools in 2026 can be given your system as a constraint at the point of generation. You give the tool your token set, your component rules, your brand position. It generates within them. The output is differentiated because the constraints are differentiated — not because the AI is smarter, but because you were more deliberate about what you handed it.
This flips the competitive calculus. The discipline that looked like overhead before AI tooling is now the primary source of visual differentiation. The teams that built design infrastructure aren't just doing fine cosmetically — they're compounding it, because AI amplifies their constraints rather than averaging away from them.
Two Positions Available
Teams that haven't built strong design systems yet have two honest positions available, and only two.
The first is to use AI tooling to establish the system faster than would have been possible manually. Generate component variants at speed. Establish token sets, prototype brand expressions, stress-test design decisions across hundreds of states. The AI output is raw material — your design judgment is the constraint. This is how you use the moment to build the moat rather than flatten it.
The second is to accept UI as a commodity and compete on something else: onboarding experience, integration depth, data quality, support responsiveness. Some products should take this route. Not every B2B tool needs visual differentiation. The mistake isn't choosing to commodify the interface — it's not choosing, and spending design resources on AI-generated screens that look like everyone else's while hoping that iteration will solve a structural problem.
Iteration on an undifferentiated foundation produces a better version of generic.
The Constraint Is the Strategy
Design strategy was never primarily about aesthetics. It was about deciding which problems to solve and making those decisions visible in the interface. A well-governed design system is a record of those decisions — what this product communicates, what it deliberately doesn't, and what the rules are for extending it.
AI can generate the execution. It cannot generate the decision. The teams that will differentiate visually over the next few years are the ones treating design governance as a strategic asset: a set of constraints that define what the AI is allowed to produce in their name.
Not a style guide. Not a Figma file with some components. A system of deliberate decisions about what this product is.
If your users can't tell your product from the template, neither can your investors.
